Aston Martin LED Repair work

HM 90th Birthday

McGurk Aston Marin shines for Her Majesty the Queen

On Saturday October 15, 2016 British classic vehicles with combined valuations of £19,033,150 lined up on the forecourt of Buckingham Palace to help commemorate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty.   They were inspected, on her behalf, by HRH Prince Michael of Kent.

Each of the ninety vehicles was manufactured in a specific year of her life, and represented that year.   The first was a 1926 'Bullnose' Morris Oxford Tourer, the last an impressive 2016 Ford Focus RS.   Among the many other superb machines on display, in possibly the best-ever gathering of British vehicles, was a 1948 Jaguar XK120 - the most famous competition Jaguar of all time, reg. no. NUB 120; a 1952 AEC Regent 111 - a London double-decker bus which completed a 12,000 mile tour of the USA and Canada in 1952 as a promotion for British goods and tourism; a 1959 Morris Mini-Minor - the first-ever Mini off the production line; the fantastic hybrid McLaren P.1. and the beautiful 2016 Jaguar F-PACE.

“David & Caroline Walley from Rowington in their  2009 Aston Martin DBS Volante was one of these 90 vehicles.

The line-up included three London Taxis, four sports-racing cars, three police cars, as well as various models of Aston Martin, Austin Healey, Bentley, BSA, Caterham,  Cooper, Daimler, DeLorean, Ford, Jaguar, Jensen, Lea-Francis, Lotus, McLaren, MG, Morgan, Morris, Noble, Riley, Rolls Royce, Rover, Triumph, TVR, Vauxhall, Windsor and Wolseley.

All Electric Aston Martin

An all-electric version of the Aston Martin Rapide saloon has been unveiled – and insiders have hinted that in its most extreme form it could be developed with four-wheel drive and up to 1000bhp.

Called the Aston Martin RapidE, the new model is set to go on sale in around two years' time. Targeted first at China as a way of meeting pressing fleet average CO2 regulations, it has been developed by Williams Advanced Engineering in Grove with assistance from a Shanghai-based investment partner, ChinaEquity. Aston Martin eventually intends to offer the car for sale around the world.

Speaking exclusively to Autocar before the RapidE’s unveiling, staged as part of a UK-China creative summit to coincide with the UK visit of Chinese president Xi Jinping, Aston CEO Andy Palmer revealed that the car would potentially be available in two versions, the first of which will be a rear-wheel-drive model with similar power to the existing 550bhp petrol Rapide. That should have what Palmer describes as a “reasonably driven” range of about 200 miles.

However, the headline-grabber will be a shorter-range, super-performance version of the RapidE with a separate electric motor driving each of its four wheels, and a total of 800 to 1000bhp on tap. “We’re going to need the traction of all four wheels to deal with the torque,” said Palmer, who added that this second project will be developed after the first is launched.

In Track mode, the car will be capable of lapping the Nurburgring very quickly indeed, Palmer said, although he declined to specify a target time and cautioned that, when driven hard, the car's range will obviously be much shorter. The four-motor set-up should allow the RapidE the latest in traction-keeping torque-vectoring and regenerative braking systems, all of which will help its ‘Ring performance.

The RapidE’s styling hardly varies from that of the existing V12-powered Rapide S - apart from some special exterior graphics and some distinctive blue 'RapidE' badging. However, under the bonnet, the familiar V12 is replaced by a mass of Williams-developed power electronics, above a battery bank mounted along the car’s backbone.

Williams is one of the UK’s foremost developers of electric vehicles, having won plaudits for its development of the batteries used in latest single-seat Formula E racing cars. ChinaEquity, described by Palmer as “a business we know well”, is already an investor in Invest Industrial, which is one of Aston’s owners, and is believed to be putting up £50 million to make the RapidE project a reality.

Prices for the RapidE are expected to start at around £200,000 – up from around £150,000 for the standard car – although the top-spec version will be more expensive. If the car is well accepted by dealers and customers, Aston’s plan is to build about 400 cars a year, using the existing Rapide facilities at Gaydon.

“We are aiming to sell around 100 RapidEs a year in China and are pretty sure there will be a demand for cars in those numbers,” said Palmer. “We see luxury electric vehicles as an intrinsic part of our future product portfolio and welcome ChinaEquity into the next phase of product development.”

Palmer believes Tesla’s experience of selling around 35,000 battery-powered cars worldwide at roughly £100,000 each makes his plan of selling just 400 more upmarket models look realistic.

Stratford Festival of Motoring

We will be attending the first Stratford Festival of Motoring.
All being well you will find us opposite the Encore Pub on Waterside. Do come along and say Hello!

The Stratford Festival of Motoring will take place on Sunday 5 and Monday 6 May 2013 - the Bank Holiday Weekend.

There will be two 'Runs' for entrants. On Sunday, the "Test Hills Run" (so named because before the days of purpose-built test circuits, Midlands motor manufacturers would take their cars up and down the steepest hills in Warwickshire and Gloucestershire to test them for pulling power and braking ability!) This will be an approx. 80 mile route, taking about 2 1/2 hours, passing through some delightful towns such as Edgehill, Mickleton, Chipping Campden, and Broadway.

On the Monday, the run will be a Treasure Hunt, involving a different, shorter route, where participants have to answer questions while they are navigating! There will be a number of very attractive prizes available which will be presented on the Monday afternoon.

There are very few Motoring Festivals that take place in the heart of a town but that's what the Stratford Festival of Motoring is planned to be. Because of this we are restricting the event to 150 entrants.

Entry Fee - £20.00 per vehicle

The entry fee is per vehicle and this will include a 'Tulip' based Route Book, a commemorative rally plate, a professional photograph at the Finish of the Treasure Hunt on the Monday, an allocated static display space in the town centre, and discount vouchers in Stratford Restaurants.

There are very few Motoring Festivals that take place in the heart of a town but that's what is planned for Stratford upon Avon and there is already considerable excitement amongst residents and businesses alike. The Stratford Festival of Motoring will be held on paved areas throughout the town centre, (no muddy fields!) and will be free for the public to view. This weekend is traditionally busy in Stratford and the advent of the Festival of Motoring will guarantee an audience of thousands!

In the first year, the number of vehicle entries is being limited to 150 cars, including up to twenty Supercars and in total contrast, Microcars as well as an array of vintage and classic cars and vintage motorcycles, plus a number of 'surprises'.

Castle Coombe

Although it was minus something horrible I had been invited to Castle Coombe for a blast in a fully blown Caterham race car. The ice soon cleared and the sun shone for the most fun I have had in ages.

Massive thanks to Ben Clucas for pointing out how awful my braking was (not nearly late enough, must be getting old!), Ben was my instructor for the day and all round top bloke, have a look at his website link below.

Thanks also to DPR Motorsport who are "The People" in the world of Caterham Racing. Truly great car with lots of gadgets to show all the telemetry necessary to make you go faster and faster.

Final thanks to Jamie Orton for organising and hosting the event. Jamie is master behind the wheel of a Caterham race car having won championship titles in 2010 and 2011. Jamie is now racing a Ginetta G55 in the GT Supercup which can be seen on ITV4 along side British Touring cars.
